iPhone & iPad (Fixed) : “This message has not been downloaded from the server”

This message has been downloaded from the server

Mail issues are arising in a lot of numbers. We get lots of errors in the Mail app. Recently, when the iOS users tried to view the MS exchange emails, they are getting errors like “This message has not been downloaded from the server”.

And they are unable to download the full e-mail. Go through the article completely and solve your issue.

Reason for this issue

When you try to view the email, Your iOS device only downloads the headers of all the emails in the inbox but downloads the body of the emails from the server. When you open Outlook on your desktop computer, it will immediately start to download all the new messages and deleted them from the server.

Use IMAP instead of Pop on both your iOS device and Mac. Also, uncheck remove messages after downloading the option on Mac.

Most of the common problems will be solved when you try the Restart method. Connection issues and other problems will be rectified. So for that,

For iPhone and iPad with Home button:

  • Press and hold the top button for about a minute until you see a Power Off Slider.
  • Drag the slider to the right and wait for a minute until you see the Apple Logo.
  • That’s it your device is restarted now.

  • This is not an exact solution to solve the problem. But this is a simple trick to view the message. Try to view the mail. If it did not show full content, click the “Forward” option.
  • The app will ask you “Download the rest of the message first?”. Choose “Yes”. It will show the message quoted in the forward.
  • Through this, you can view the message by tapping on the forward option.

Solution 3: Delete the Mail Account and Re-add it

Sometimes the mail account that you are using will have a problem in the settings. So, Delete the account that you are currently using and re-add it again. After that check whether the problem is gone or not. For that,

  1. It still does not fix it for me. This problem just started happening. Difficult because I tend to read my e mails in the evening when I am not in front of my computer. It does not do it with all e mails. Some e mails I can open one day and the next day, the same e mail (that I want to continue reading) gives me the message of not downloaded.

  2. I have restarted everything and even taken the I Pad into Best Buy Apple people and they are perplexed. I have double checked every setting I have with my Husbands (same) I Pad, this seems to have happened sometime during the last update… It has been about 1 month. I am hoping now that it will somehow fix itself. I do not have an Apple store nearby and my service contract I had for my I Pad is over.

  3. Have the same problem.
    Desktop and laptop appear ok.
Apple iPad and iPhone both give the problem.
Spent a lot of time with my internet provider but could not fix.
He suggested contact AppleCare telling them all the steps we went to in attempting to fix.
The problem is known to Apple.
They advised we have to wait until next update 9.1 to see if it fixes it.

  4. I had this problem of emails being viewed and opened on my iPad ok. Then a day or so later the message " this message has not been downloaded from server " would appear. This problem only began after the upgrade 9.01 I think. Now after the latest update 9.1 the problem is STILL occurring . I hope the team are on to it because I was led to believe that they thought they fixed it…..well NOPE.

  5. I appreciate all of the suggestions but the problem persists. I've given up trying to sort out apple's native client.
That such a problem with e-mail occurs is understandable, the programming is no doubt daunting.
The fact that apple didn't immediately fix the issue is aggravating. How could apple be so indifferent to one of the primary web services? Why isn't this a top priority for apple?
The fact that the problem has persisted for so long is unforgivable. I might as well go back with doing battle with Microsoft's product line of flawed products.
I downloaded Altamail for $4 and so far it works great. It is a bit over-kill for my basic needs but it also handles my personal POP e-mail domain; as far as I can tell, it's the only iPad client that does.

    1. I'm having the same problem as the rest of you here, grrrr. it is very annoying. So I tried an alternate email app on my iPad (Boxer) but I couldn't find an option to have it leave a copy of the message on my server, which defeats the purpose for me as I use my computer to get the 'final' copy of emails.
So, my question – does AltaMail have a setting to 'leave a copy' of messages on server? If it does then maybe I will try that as the basic mail app on iPad is useless like this!

  6. Same problem here, just since the latest update, 9.something. I can't keep track. I went to apple.com to try to report it, but there doesn't seem to be an easy way to do that without opening a whole support ticket.

  7. I too, have had this problem since the previous update before the new one recently.
Never had it happen before that update, and mail is just lost, once it is opened. Hope it is fixed soon. Would undo that particular update, if I could figure out how to do it. I have tried everything I know to fix it, but can't! Hope it is fixed soon!

  8. This is a problem. I need my whole emails downloaded and stored on my phone not just the headers. This was a minor problem until the latest update. With all of the data eating tasks our phones are used for do we really think that down loading emails is where we should economize?

  9. just tried doing the fake forward but that doesn't work…i tell it to load the whole message but nothing comes up in the message nor when the forwarded message is received. I know the message is still on the server because I can load it from other email clients even as I write this

  10. Yes this is a serious pain in the ass. Very frustrating and shouldn't happen. You pay top dollar for these phones for this??? Sucks.
