  1. If you have more than 2 Keyboards installed (eg. English, Emoji, Google) then the microphone icon can get replaced for lack of room. Setting your installed keyboard count back to 2 will resolve for this issue.
Settings>General>Keyboard>Keyboards – Swipe Left to delete the keyboard of choice.
Anomaly Note: In this situation, with 3 keyboards enabled, the Microphone Icon only gets replaced when texting other iPhones. The Microphone Icon will still be available if texting an Android device. Go figure.

  2. thanks Neil, 1/2 hour of looking and that was the answer. I never even installed a new keyboard, but one day the mic was gone!

  3. This happened to me on iOS 10.3.3 after adding Restrictions because my kids were temporarily using it. I'd disabled the Restrictions immediately after getting the phone back from my kids (3 & 5 year old.). Unfortunately the microphone was gone from the keyboard.
This is what worked for me:
Go to Settings -> General -> Restrictions. Enable Restrictions and slide "Siri & Dictation" OFF. Close out of settings, go back in and re-enable "Siri & Dictation" and then check your Message app for a microphone. After verifying the microphone was back on the keyboard in Messages, I then disabled "Restrictions."
